Singapore local news reflection--by Eric

Original article:
Shanghai S'pore Day deferred
from http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_489784.html

Summery:
As an annual event for the overseas Singaporeans-- SINAGAPORE day is deferred this year which was supposed to be held in Shanghai, China. The time of the SINGAPORE day was put off to the first half of the next year and the location of the issue will not change. The reason why the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) which organises the event every year gave for the delay is due to the consideration of the clash with the World EXPO that will be held in Shanghai this year and Many Singaporeans will be involved in this.

My reflection:
When I first read this news I thought it didn't make any sense. Actually I think there were not any connection between the SINGAPORE DAY and the world EXPO except for the place of issue. Although the two events were both held in one city, the time is different and the whole ideas of the events are totally different. I cannot see any of the 'clash' through the news.
Based on the news, the reason why the OSU cancel the event is that they thought there would be many Singaporeans in Shanghai during the world EXPO. So why didn't the OSU change the date to May 2010? It will be really convenient for the overseas Singaporean to celebrate their SINGAPORE DAY while visiting the EXPO. In this case, overseas Singaporeans will have to come to Shanghai again in the next year. Will it be same as the situation right now? It is really fard for me to understand this.
Sorry for that.

  1. Yeah, i can not see the clash between Singapore Day and the EXPO, either.I think the reasons should be presented in the article, but why the writer did not even mention the reason? Is it because the reason is too obvious to talk about? Maybe we can figure it out after research for more details about the Singapore day.

  2. In fact, I agree with Eric's idea that there is no need to cancel this year's Singapore Day. Because we did not find any obvious connection between these two events. In contrary, I think OSU should hold this event in Shanghai. It can attract more overseas Singaporens to participate.

  3. What I found was interesting plot about this issue is the relation between China and Singapore and the considerate quality of Singapore Organization. I understand the confusion of Eric and I consider it as a result of culture difference. As a member of NTU virtual art club, I was educated that in each seminar individual should express his idea and opinion towards others’ as the basic requirement of team work. This Singapore spirit of unity may me the main reason of the delay of the Singapore Day for the organization may hope that everyone could join in this event as a citizen of this country. Furthermore, the EXPO is the focus of the world attention during that period and the decision of OSU demonstrates its respect and cooperation to the momentous issue. All in all, its is a worthy compromise and it benefits Singaporean.
